HUDSON: Democrats’ ludicrous claim that most expensive bill in history will cost $0

Freedom is under attack.

Liberal politicians in Washington think they know what’s best for you when it comes to your health care, what your children are learning in school, what kind of car you should drive, and how you spend the money in your bank account.

Their reckless spending has already led to skyrocketing inflation. Unfortunately, Washington Democrats are doing everything they can to advance trillions more in government spending and new taxes that will transform our society and only make inflation worse.

Last week, Democrats worked to advance their $3,5000,000,000,000 infrastructure bill. Only 10% of this bill goes to roads, bridges and traditional infrastructure. Their $3.5 trillion boondoggle includes $2.1 trillion in tax increases, funds abortions, includes radical Green New Deal climate provisions, and opens the door to amnesty for 8 million illegal immigrants.

President Biden and Speaker Pelosi have made the claim that this spending bill — the largest in the history of the United States — will cost $0. That is ludicrous. By the way, if this was true, then why do they need to raise the debt ceiling?

The left-leaning Tax Policy Center determined the bill will result in a tax hike for 75% of middle-class families next year.

In reality, this bill includes a 33% tax increase on 1.4 million small businesses, affecting 12.5 million American workers. The left-leaning Tax Policy Center determined the bill will result in a tax hike for 75% of middle-class families next year. The Joint Committee on Taxation found that within 10 years, 66% of the tax burden from raising the business tax would be on lower and middle-class workers. The National Association of Manufacturers released a study showing the tax increase would cost one million jobs in two years. The bill would lead to your monthly utility bills costing more. And finally, it adds $17 trillion to our national debt to be paid for by your children and grandchildren.

I oppose this agenda because of the extreme cost to you and your family. We must make common-sense investments in our roads, bridges, highways and broadband. But we must also work to grow our economy and get people back to work. Exploding the size of our federal government and its control over your life does not help achieve that goal. 

While Democrats push to advance their agenda, last week I worked to defend our Second Amendment.

The annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) funds our entire Defense Department for the year. It included pay raises for our troops and provisions I secured for Fort Bragg. However, this year’s defense bill is not a perfect bill. I strongly opposed Democrats, who just like last year, inserted a section on Red Flag laws that threaten the Second Amendment rights of our servicemembers. Like last year, I am leading efforts to ensure these provisions are removed. Last week, 160 of my colleagues joined my push to ensure Red Flag laws are stripped from the final bill. I appreciate their support and will continue this fight until the bill is finalized.

And finally, it seems only one person has been punished over the botched Afghanistan withdrawal. Unfortunately, it is Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, a Marine who spoke out against President Biden’s deadly withdrawal. I reached out to Lt. Col. Scheller when he was relieved of his command as a result. Then last week, it was reported he was detained indefinitely without being charged with a crime or receiving a trial date for posting on social media. I wrote to the secretary of the Navy last week with urgent questions about his status, because our men and women in uniform deserve due process.

There are many challenges before Congress right now. Yet rest assured I will work to provide common-sense solutions that work for you and your family and will always stand in the way of reckless spending and bigger government.

GINGRICH: Biden’s border disaster

As President Joe Biden vacationed at Rehoboth Beach, the disaster at the U.S. southern border continued to metastasize.

Anyone who has seen pictures of thousands of people crossing the Rio Grande en masse knows the administration has achieved complete failure.

Anyone who has seen the overhead drone footage of more than 12,000 people gathered under one bridge in South Texas knows that massive, historic incompetence is being allowed to flourish.

At the same time, it’s clear that — despite all the Big Government Socialists in Biden’s party who complain about America — we remain the one country people desperately try to get into. There are no caravans trying to force their ways into China or Russia. The rest of the world knows that freedom and free-market capitalism work and create desirable lives.

The Biden-Harris fantasy of an open border is an invitation to a growing catastrophic collapse of rational, sane, orderly policy. As Gallup’s World Poll reported in 2018, “One in five potential migrants (21%) — or about 158 million adults worldwide — name the US as their desired future residence.” This means that that the Biden-Harris focus on Central America is irrelevant. The Pew Research Center reported in August, 2021 that 29% of illegal immigrants on the southern border came from countries other than Mexico and the Central American triangle. That was a jump from 9% in 2019. 

So, we could have a 50% increase in the American population if the Biden Border Disaster continues long enough — and the number might increase as people get here and email or call home saying that life is a lot better in the United States — a lot better.

The border is another area (politically and physically) in which Big Government Socialists do not believe in the rule of law — and have contempt for the Constitution. They have a fascist-like belief in the importance of raw power (note the behavior of the Nancy Pelosi dictatorship in the House in which she threatened to arrest staff members who disobey her mask mandate).

This contempt for the law means that the federal government is routinely breaking the law at the border in the name of politics. Rather than following existing immigration law which would impose order and counter people trying to enter the country illegally, the Biden administration weakens enforcement, makes it easier for people to cross the border, and then bypasses legal controls to keep track of immigrants once they are here. All elected officials and federal agents swear to uphold the law. At the border in particular, the Biden administration is instructing them to break the law.

There is also a profound double standard at the border. No people here illegally are being told to wear masks or get vaccinated or tested for COVID-19. President Biden is prepared to use the force of government to impose rules on Americans, but he refuses to impose those rules on people crossing the border illegally. 

Even among those who cross the border, some immigrants are being treated with one set of rules, while others are being treated differently. The double standards are incomprehensible to the point of just being weird.

It is understandable that Big Government Socialists would be biased against Cuban immigrants. Cubans having experienced first-hand the poverty and oppression of a communist dictatorship and socialism. They also vote overwhelmingly for Republicans.

What is harder to understand is the Biden administration’s reaction to the immigrants from Haiti. While many other immigrants are being bussed and flown around America to a wide range of cities, there is apparently a real effort to fly Haitians back to Haiti.

The brutality of this policy has led the American Special Envoy to Haiti to resign in protest. Here is what he wrote to Secretary of State Antony Blinken:

“With deep disappointment and apologies to those seeking crucial changes, I resign from my position as Special Envoy for Haiti, effective immediately. I will not be associated with the United States inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegally immigrants to Haiti, a country where American officials are confined to secure compounds because of the danger posed by armed gangs in control of daily life. Our policy approach to Haiti remains deeply flawed, and my recommendations have been ignored and dismissed, when not edited to project a narrative different from my own.”

Make no mistake: This is squarely the Biden border disaster.

President Donald Trump had developed a series of policy initiatives which had the border under control. The Biden administration rejected virtually every one of those initiatives and adopted an essentially open-border policy (except for Cubans and Haitians).  

The nightmare is going to get worse, and the chaotic mass migration of people from all over the world is going to continue. Conditions at the border will only get more “inhumane” and “counterproductive.”

Of course, none of this seems to bother Biden in Rehoboth Beach. 

In fact, I haven’t yet found any evidence that Biden has ever gone to the southern border — either as a senator or as vice president. There are rumors that Biden may have come close to the border in 1987 — but no proof that he actually got to the border.

The Biden border disaster is a combination of Big Government Socialists’ ideological principles that do not fit reality and a total collapse of competence. It is just going to get worse until the American people demand dramatic changes.

HUDSON: Reagan’s warnings on inflation still ring true

“A President’s greatest responsibility is to protect all our people from enemies, foreign and domestic. Here at home the worst enemy we face is economic — the creeping erosion of the American way of life and the American dream that has resulted in today’s tragedy of economic stagnation and unemployment.”

President Ronald Reagan said these words in 1982. However, they ring as true today as ever before.

As the crisis on our southern border worsens and inflation reaches new highs, last week Washington liberals ignored these problems and continued their reckless spending spree. The House passed legislation which would once again raise the debt ceiling in order to pay for their $3,500,000,000,000 liberal wish list. Keeping our government open is critical. However, I opposed this move to allow more debt. Democrats — who control the House, Senate and White House and who have spent trillions already this year — should not have a blank check to recklessly spend even more of your tax dollars. Their bill will raise taxes on everyone, give the federal government more control over your life from the cradle to the grave, and only make our inflation crisis worse.

Despite this, their bill did have one good provision — funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. However, last Tuesday, Washington Democrats caved to racist, anti-Semitic factions and stripped this funding from the bill. Later that day, we forced a second vote to approve the funding for Israel. Once again, radical, racist Democrats opposed it.

America should always stand with Israel at every opportunity. Failing to do so is shameful and our allies, as well as our adversaries, are watching.

As threats increase around the world, I was glad the House was able to come together and pass our nation’s bipartisan annual defense bill last week.

This year’s National Defense Authorization Act is not perfect. But I was proud to support this bill which included much needed funding for Fort Bragg and our men and women in the military.

Overall, it provides a 2.7% pay increase for servicemembers and reverses dangerous cuts to our military proposed by President Biden. It also adds resources to secure our border, holds the Biden administration accountable for its withdrawal from Afghanistan, and protects servicemembers’ personal liberties.

I am especially proud that the bill includes provisions I have worked on throughout the year. For Fort Bragg, $27 million was included for needed construction projects on the base. For military families, my bill to expand and improve education funding was included. I also championed included provisions to increase PFAS testing on bases, combat sexual assault in the military, and modernize the Basic Allowance for Housing.

There are several provisions in the bill I am concerned about, including red-flag laws that threaten the Second Amendment rights of servicemembers. However, like last year, I will now work to ensure these provisions are removed as negotiations continue between the House and Senate.

I will never waiver from my commitment to support our troops, their families, and our veterans. The NDAA is an example that we can still come together and solve problems for our nation. Now we must do the same on issues like growing our economy, supporting our allies like Israel, and ending the crisis on our border. I will stay focused on common-sense solutions on behalf of you and your family.

Labonte contends in Caraway feature

SOPHIA – Bobby Labonte, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, had to settle for second place at Caraway Speedway.

That’s because Jonathan Brown won for the first time in the SMART Modified Tour, edging Labonte in Saturday night’s 99-lap race.

Brown became the seventh different driver to win on the SMART Modified Tour this year. Labonte previously won this year at Dillon Motor Speedway and Carteret County.

“We were off a little bit in qualifying, I didn’t feel like I got a good lap, but we were able to start third on the redraw and get some points for the 30-lap shootout,” Labonte said. “At the end, I couldn’t catch Jonathan in the right place.  I felt like I was faster but passing him was going to be difficult.”

Burt Myers finished third, followed by Caleb Heady and Jeremy Gerstner.

There were other notable results Saturday at the track.

Jason York claimed the 50-lap Late Models race from the pole, with Mike Bledsoe the runner-up. Division points leader Blaise Brinkley was sixth.

The Mini Stocks race was won by Brandon Brendle, with Tyler Bush second in the 2-lap feature.

Joe Fleenor captured his first career victory by winning the 602 Modified race. Fleenor led the whole way, with Brian Weber second.

Other winners were Nick Collins (Street Stock) and Riley Neal (Sportsman).

  • It was the second racing card of the week at Caraway Speedway.

On Labor Day, Brinkley (Late Models), Cody Griffin (Challenger), Brendle (Mini Stocks) and Allen Vance (U-Car) were among the winners.

Brinkley was the top qualifier and never relinquished the lead, with Tony Black was the runner-up.

Griffin was a surprise winner in Challengers because initial winner Tyler Johnson was disqualified based on a postrace car inspection. Division points leader Mike Chambers was third.

Brendle, who was the Mini Stocks track champion at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, finished ahead of Tyler Bush and points leader Brandon Collins.

Vance secured the 20-lap triumph despite Steven Collins holding a lead for 13 laps. Collins ended up third behind Troy Ring.

Also, Dylan Ward (Sportsman) and Nate Gregg (Street Stocks) won races for Bowman Gray Stadium divisions, while Bryce Applegate and Nate Tetrow each won a Legends car event.

Ward passed brother Trevor Ward, who was third behind Michael Adams. Gregg claimed the 25-lap feature in his race.

Applegate had the best qualifying time in Legends and won the first of the twin features. Applegate was second in the next feature.

Patriots pad early resume

CLIMAX – Each week there has been something to cherish for Providence Grove’s football team.

That came in various doses in Friday night’s 28-14 triumph against visiting Asheboro.

“Anytime you can beat one of the bigger schools in the county, that’s huge,” Providence Grove coach Calvin Brown said.

Providence Grove is 4-0 for just the second time in school history. It’s shaping up as a potential special season for the Patriots.

“They’re aware of it,” Brown said of the place in history early in the season. “I want them to understand that it’s something special.”

This week, the Patriots try to reach a 5-0 mark for the first time when they play a home game against undefeated Ledford on Friday night.

“I think this will have a big-game feel to it,” Brown said of the first-ever football meeting between the schools. “This is another 3-A opponent.”

The game against Asheboro had numerous players with notable numbers.

Zane Cheek ran for 186 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown. Caleb Rogers had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Lemuel Coltrane made a touchdown reception. Quarterback Luke Thomas threw for two touchdowns. Tucker Batten was good on all four extra-point kicks.

The Patriots jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The defense did much of the work.

“Our defense played incredible,” Brown said.

Karson Bowman returned a fumble for a touchdown. Rogers intercepted two passes.

Providence Grove relies on two-way players. Cheek is a free safety and Rogers plays cornerback on defense.

The team made a rather seamless transition from the spring season.

“We’ve got a lot of returners (so) we’re older and experienced,” Brown said. “We rolled right into the season. There wasn’t much we had to do.”

Asheboro (1-2) has lost two games in a row. Michael Brady compiled 136 rushing yards on 21 carries. Khyland Hadley-Lindsey and Charles Perry scored touchdowns on running plays.

Southwestern Randolph 57, West Davidson 10: At Asheboro, Adam Cole scored four touchdowns and Easton Clapp had two touchdowns as the host Cougars (3-0) rolled. Keaton Reed threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

This week, there’s a schedule change for Southwestern Randolph. The Cougars will be home against Starmount instead of taking on Albemarle.

Eastern Randolph 8, Williams 6: At Burlington, the visiting Wildcats stopped a two-point conversion play by Williams to hold on.

Nahiem Lilly’s 6-yard run in the third quarter provided the game’s first points for Eastern Randolph (3-0). He tacked on a two-point conversion run, proving to be the difference in the game.

Williams scored on Dan Mahan’s 6-yard pass to Izayah Ramsey with about 10 minutes remaining, but a two-point conversion play failed.

Williams (1-3) managed 179 yards of total offense and was 1-for-9 on converting third downs.

Wheatmore 39, Chatham Central 6: At Bear Creek, Jonathan Kelly scored three touchdowns and Ben Walker threw for two touchdowns for the Warriors (2-1).

Kelly had 85 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards. Dylan Weil had a touchdown catch and a pair of two-point conversion grabs.

Trinity 54, Jordan-Matthews 14: At Trinity, David Makupson racked up four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 21, 16 and 30 yards and on a catch of 32 yards. Bo Gibson had two touchdown runs for Trinity (2-2). Landon Carter was credited with three interceptions.

Providence Grove | Cross Country | Sophomore

Auman, a sophomore, won the Millennium Charter Academy Invitational, helping the Patriots to the team title at Beeson Park in Kernersville. Auman finished the 5-kilometer race in 23 minutes, 55.61 seconds for about a 13-second victory on runner-up Annika Bell of East Wilkes. There was a field of 43 runners.

On the boys’ side, Wheatmore was the team champion among a field of 12 scoring teams. Providence Grove, led by third-place individual Robert Burton, was the team runner-up. Burton finished in 20:00.03, with Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood fourth in a personal-best 20:06.90.

Rep. Ted Budd meets with restaurant owners in Asheboro and Burlington

ASHEBORO — Two restaurants in Asheboro and Burlington received a visit from Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC13) today as “Help Wanted” signs have become an increasingly more prevalent sight across the state.

Budd talked with owners and workers at the Golden Corral in Asheboro and the Biscuitville in Burlington about the ongoing labor shortage and the importance of ending the current federal stay at home unemployment bonus.

“The federal government’s enhanced unemployment payment of $300 extra dollars each week has incentivized workers to stay at home and not get back into the workforce. Essentially, these additional payments constitute a stay at home bonus,” said Budd in a statement. “Worse yet, it forces local restaurants to compete against the federal government for wages. That’s not a fair fight.”

Recently, Asheboro restaurant Dixie III was unable to open due to a worker shortage. The 40-year mainstay has announced it’s closing next week.

Joining Budd were members of the N.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association, as well as State Senator Amy Galey (R-Alamance).

Budd’s visit coincides with the report on U.S. Job figures for August, which fell far short of the estimated 750,000 mark, with only 235,000 jobs added for the month.

“The federal government should be on the side of our job-creators, not competing against them,” said Budd. “The best thing we can do for our workers and our economy is to end this backwards incentive and help get folks back into good-paying jobs.”​

Are your chickens cool enough to beat the heat?

ASHEBORO — Summer heat and humidity is upon us and we are all looking for ways to cool off.  Your backyard feathered friends are no exception. Chickens are becoming popular as backyard egg producers and pets so owners should be on the lookout for heat stress on members of their flocks as the summer heat reaches its peak.

An experienced chicken keeper knows their flock, their personalities and habits.  This type of relationship provides you quick insight into changes in flock disposition that can be an early sign that something is a little off.  Disease or other stressors can decrease production, cause unnecessary stress and fatigue, or even mortality.  Although all flocks and flock members will behave a little differently under normal circumstances, there are some obvious signs that your birds could be experiencing heat stress. Keep an eye out for these symptoms which could require immediate action: panting/labored breathing, holding wings out and away from the body, pale combs and wattles, decrease in egg production, decrease in energy or enthusiasm, or loose fecal droppings.

If your birds are exhibiting these symptoms, it’s important to take immediate action.  And even if they’re not, the following are good precautionary measures to prevent heat stress in your flock.

Be sure that fresh clean water is readily available and kept in a cool shady area.  If water consumption is decreased, adding electrolytes can be a good way to boost water intake and reduce dehydration.  Electrolytes can be purchased in various forms but are most often found in water soluble powders that mix easily in your water source.  Be sure to follow the product’s label when mixing as a highly diluted solution will not provide necessary intake and an over concentrated solution may actually cause birds to drink less.

Keeping your flock cool is also important. If your coop is mobile, relocate it to shady area with good ventilation.  If your coop is stationary, look for ways to encourage air movement by opening any and all vents in the structure.  If you have an electrical supply nearby, adding a fan can be helpful.  We all know the value of a good breeze on a hot summer day.

If your birds are free range or your coop has an outside run, be sure they have access to shady areas.  Placing feeders and drinkers in those areas can encourage chickens to spend more time out of direct sunlight.  Placing temporary roosts or other forms of enrichment in shady areas also helps encourage birds to stay cool.  If natural shade is not available in your run, consider providing temporary shade until the fall when cooler weather returns.  Think pop up tent, tarps, shade cloth, etc.

Summertime is also a good time to change out older deep bedding that may be acting as compost and a heat source.  New bedding will be less compacted and facilitate the escape of excess body heat.  Selecting a coarse bedding – think shavings instead of sawdust – will also allow for more air space and facilitate natural air flow.

If you have exhausted all of the above, and your birds are still exhibiting signs of heat stress, moisture can do the trick.  Adding misters in areas that the birds frequent or lightly dampening the ground with a water hose in common areas can encourage evaporative cooling.  Some producers may even find it beneficial to add small wading pools with shallow water for the birds to access, but not all feathered friends will be a fan of this feature.

Now that you know the signs of heat stress and what you can do about it, make sure you take the necessary steps to ensure the health and welfare of your feathered friends.  If you need additional help with any of your poultry needs, your local extension office and area specialized agents are available to help.

City schools announce substitute teacher partnership

ASHEBORO — Asheboro City Schools announced a new partnership with ESS who will manage the district’s substitute program. ESS will recruit, screen, train, hire, and manage applicants looking to be part or full-time substitutes in Asheboro City Schools. ESS will place substitute teachers and provide an online substitute management program that allows full-time teachers and staff to log their absences electronically. Those absences are then immediately visible to the substitutes interested in accepting the vacant positions.
