ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tyshaun Goldson, Randleman, boys’ basketball

Goldston, a sophomore, had quite a week in a pair of victories for the Tigers.

He rolled up 19 points and six rebounds when Randleman defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 68-42. 

Then came Goldston’s 15 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots in a 49-43 victory at Providence Grove.

Goldston holds team-leading marks of 16.1 points, 7.7 rebounds per game, and 2.1 blocked shots per game.

With an 11-5 record entering this week, the Tigers already eclipsed last season’s eight-win mark.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dylan Hodges

Trinity, boys’ basketball

Hodges is turning in a splendid senior season on the basketball court.

He was the team’s only player to score in double figures in every game last week as the Bulldogs placed third in the Ledford bracket of the Davidson-Randolph Christmas Classic.

Hodges racked up 20, 19, and 14 points in those games.

Hodges, who also has excelled in football and as a high jumper in track and field, is the only senior in the regular rotation for the basketball team.

The Bulldogs entered the new year with a 12-3 record.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tramir Martin

Tramir Martin |  Asheboro, boys’ basketball

Martin, a senior guard, had a strong three-game run in the Mid-Piedmont Conference Tournament as the Blue Comets pulled out a championship.

He scored a total of 41 points in the three games, giving the Blue Comets a lift with his backcourt play. His defensive work boosted Asheboro to some key rallies, particularly in the semifinal.

Martin notched 11 points in a rout of Montgomery Central in the quarterfinals before leading the charge with 17 points in a semifinal victory against Central Davidson. He added 13 points in Friday night’s 60-52 win over top-seeded Ledford in the championship game.

Randleman girls make it clear; Other races stay tight

Randleman’s girls’ basketball team secured the Piedmont Athletic Conference regular-season championship even before the last week of the regular season.

The Tigers held an 11-0 league mark and a 19-0 overall record with only a home game against last-place Trinity remaining on the conference docket.

It was much tighter on the PAC boys’ side. Three teams had a shot going into the week, each with two conference games left.

Providence Grove led the way with an 8-2 league mark, while Uwharrie Charter and Trinity both stood at 7-3.

The remaining games for the Patriots were set to be against the bottom two teams in the standings – at Eastern Randolph and home vs. Wheatmore.

Providence Grove closed in on a title by trouncing visiting Randleman 68-48 on Friday night for its most-lopsided victory in league play this season.

Trinity kept things interesting earlier in the week by knocking off visiting Providence Grove 64-57 with Trace Moffitt (16 points), Dominic Payne (15) and Aidan Blakely (14) providing balanced scoring.

Mid-Piedmont Conference

This week began with the Asheboro girls and boys sweeping host Montgomery Central on Monday night.

Asheboro’s boys stayed in the hunt for a share of the regular-season title by winning 67-53 as Jerquarius Stanback and DJ Headen both supplied 12 points.

For the girls, Asheboro secured its first Mid-Piedmont Conference victory by stopping Montgomery Central 42-35 behind Kimry Comer’s 13 points, Ellon Long’s nine points and 12 rebounds, and Sion Murrain’s 15 rebounds.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Davonte Brooks

Davonte Brooks  |  Eastern Randolph, boys’ basketball

Brooks racked up 25 points as the Wildcats ended a four-game losing streak with Friday’s 68-64 victory at Wheatmore.

Brooks, a junior who was coming off a strong football season, has boosted the Wildcats on the basketball court.

Eastern Randolph nearly ended its skid earlier last week, but it dropped a 50-46 overtime decision at home to Randleman.

Eastern Randolph began the season with five straight wins before some rough patches. The Wildcats entered this week with an 8-9 overall record and 2-6 mark in the Piedmont Athletic Conference.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dylan Wheatley

Wheatley made five 3-point shots in two different games in a pair of victories for the Tigers last week. The senior averaged 20.5 points in those games.

In a 67-64 road victory against Trinity, he shot 7-for-10 from the field on the way to 20 points.

Two nights later at home, he racked up 21 points in a 57-53 victory against Wheatmore. He was 6-for-10 from the field in that game.

The outcomes brought an end to a four-game losing streak and improved Randleman’s record to 5-10. The Tigers won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Trace Moffitt

Trinity  | Boys Basketball

Moffitt, a sophomore, racked up 35 points in the team’s lone game of the week. That nearly matched the total scored by the opponent in the Bulldogs’ 73-44 victory against host Eastern Randolph.

Trinity also received 16 points from Dominic Payne and 12 points from Brandon Campbell in the game. The outcome means the Bulldogs improved their record to 12-3. It put the team at 4-1 in true road games.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sean Adkins

Southwestern Randolph  |  Boys’ Basketball  |  Junior

Adkins poured in 20 points as the Cougars secured a 61-48 non-conference victory last week at Chatham Central. It’s a huge point total for the junior considering Southwestern Randolph has struggled at times on the offensive end.

Coupled with the previous Friday’s road victory at Randleman (when Adkins had 12 points), that’s back-to-back wins for the Cougars, who improved to 5-4 overall.

The result against Chatham Central marked only the third time this season that the Cougars reached the 60-point mark.
