Bossong Memorial golf tournament raises funds for YMCA
ASHEBORO — A rain-delay did not dampen the spirits of over 100 golfers who came out to support the local YMCA on Friday. Rain threatened the Sam Bossong Memorial Golf Tournament at Pinewood Country Club and the single-round tournament was stopped briefly for a thunderstorm but teams ultimately returned to the course to complete the 22nd iteration of the tournament.
This year’s winning team of Chad Clark, Shawn Hogan, Clint Smith and Mark Vuncannon shot a 49 which included five eagles on holes 3, 4, 6, 7 and 16. The team did not record any scores of less than a birdie. Smith, a three-time Division II national champion golfer at USC-Aiken, is also a former Asheboro City-Amateur champion. Team member Shawn Hogan called it “the best round I’ve ever been a part of.”
Second place went to the team of Ken Grady, George Ladamus, Colton Sapp and Shields McKeown who shot a collective score of 53. Third place went to the team of London Cook, Keegan Lambert, Fuzzy Lambert and Ryan Smith who shot a 54.
The tournament is held each year in memory of Sam Bossong, a long-time supporter of the Randolph-Asheboro YMCA. The Asheboro Junior Women’s Club is the official host of the tournament — a captain’s choice format with proceeds going toward special projects for the YMCA, including the annual YMCA scholarships, Sam Bossong Playground and SplashPad.
This year’s tournament raised over $20,000 and 26 teams participated. Sponsors came from a multitude of industries across Randolph County. “What a wonderful day with friends and family and community members coming together to support our Randolph-Asheboro YMCA in memory of our very missed friend, Sam Bossong,” said tournament chair Gina McKee who commended the Junior Women’s Club on their tireless work to put on the tournament.
