Candidates secure spots for November ballot in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – There will be five candidates for three spots on the City of Asheboro City Council.

Candidates to file by Friday’s deadline are Eddie Burks, Jane Hughes Redding, Charles Swiers, Harry Okeke and Joey Trogdon. Burks, Redding and Swiers are incumbents.

** For the Asheboro City Schools Board of Education the candidates are incumbents Gidget Kidd, Ryan Patton and Gwenn Williams along with Melissa Calloway and Todd Dulaney.

** Mayor Filmore York will run unopposed in Liberty. Greg Carpenter and incumbent Don Herndon are the filers for Liberty town commissioner.

** In Franklinville, Priscellia Dunn and L. McKay Whatley are running for town commissioner.

** Ramseur mayor Vicki Caudle will be opposed by Hampton Spivey for that position. J.C. Parrish and Tresa Cheek Hatchell will try to retain their spots as a Ramseur town commissioner, while Jay Hubbard is also running.

** In Randleman, Mike Dawkins, Marty Leonard and Kim Grooms Keaton are running for alderman at-large positions. Others on the ballot will be Steve Grooms Jr. (Ward 1), Renee Bryant (Ward 1), Lee Hinson (Ward 4) and Kimmy Williams (Ward 4).

** In Seagrove, incumbents Homer Beheler and Carol Kim will be on the ballot for town commissioner.

** In Staley, the mayor candidates are incumbent Karen Scotton and Michelle Hooker-Ravenell. Five commissioner candidates are Renee Harrelson, Steven Rollins, Lori Lynn Langley-Hankins, Sherri Martin and Faye Johnson.

Races in High Point and Thomasville include a limited number of Randolph County residents.

** High Point’s mayoral candidates are Victor Jones, Cyril Jefferson, Abdul Rashid (Richard) Siddiqui and Gene Kininmonth.

The at-large candidates for High Point City Council are Sam Carr, Shazia Iqbal, Orel Henry, Britt W. Moore, Amanda Cook, Willie H. Davis and Kenneth Jabari Harper Jr. In Ward 3, Monica Peters and Rizwan Bahadur are running.

** Thomasville City Council candidates are Ronald Fowler, Eric Kuppel, Paul Widener Peters, Lisa Shell, Payton Williams and Dana Skeen Lomba.

Ten file on first day for fall elections

ASHEBORO – Ten Randolph County residents filed to run for office during the first five hours of filing.

Three of those are seeking to retain spots on the City of Asheboro’s city council.

Filing opened at noon Friday and continues through noon July 21.

Incumbents Eddie Burks, Jane Hughes Redding and Charles Swiers signed up for the candidate list for Asheboro’s city council.

Gidget Kidd and Ryan Patton are bidding to keep their seats on the Asheboro City Schools board of education.

For Randleman’s city council, first-day filers were Mike Dawkins (at-large), Steve Grooms Jr. (Ward 1) and Lee Hinson (Ward 4). Dawkins is an incumbent. Ward 4 is listed as vacant.

Greg Carpenter filed for the position of Liberty’s town commissioner.

Michelle Hooker-Ravenell is seeking to become Staley’s mayor.

The election is Nov. 7.

Turnout strong for early voting in Randolph County

Almost 27,000 residents cast ballots during early voting in Randolph County in advance of this week’s general election.

The turnout proved particularly heavy on the final days.

Of the 15 days used for early voting in the county, three of the heaviest four turnouts came in the last three days.

The high total was Friday’s 2,742. Next was Oct. 24 – the fourth day of early voting – with 2,080.

The third busiest day was Thursday with 2,068 and followed by Saturday’s total of 2,018 on the last day.

Election Day is Tuesday. Voters must vote a designated precinct on this day.

Four sites were used for early voting. For each day, the highest turnout was at the Randolph County Board of Election headquarters in Asheboro.

The second-busiest local was the Braxton Craven School in Trinity. Randleman Civic Center was the third most-used voting location for every day, though Franklinville United Methodist was close behind on some days.

The numbers for Randolph County were similar to 2018, which was the last mid-term election. That year, there were 26,432 early voters in the county.

Four early voting sites were used, though a couple of the locations were different.

ASHEBORO — Early voting begins Oct. 20 and runs daily, except on Sundays, through Nov. 5. Election Day is Nov. 8.

Early voting runs from 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays (Oct. 22 and 29), and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 5.

There are four early voting locations. Randolph County residents can cast ballots at any of those. On Election Day, voters can only vote at their designated precincts.

The early voting sites are: Randolph County Board of Elections, 1457 North Fayetteville St., Asheboro; Braxton Craven School gym, 7037 NC Highway 62, Trinity; Randleman Civic Center, 122 Commerce Square, Randleman; Franklinville United Methodist Church, 227 West Main St., Franklinville.

The Randolph County Board of Elections canceled its September meeting. Its next meeting is set for Oct. 4. The agenda will include consideration of absentee ballots received by the meeting date.

Sunday early voting removed in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – There will still be weekend early voting in Randolph County for the 2022 general election, but there will be a slightly different twist.

The Randolph County Board of Elections voted to nix a Sunday early voting date for this fall. Instead, there will be three Saturdays when early voting is conducted.

Melissa Johnson, who’s director of the county’s Board of Elections, said there was interest from some citizens to restore a Sunday date at last week’s August meeting. However, that decision had been made nearly a month earlier and needed to remain in place based on the board’s policies and the timetable in advance of the election.

“They couldn’t revisit it,” Johnson said.

In the spring, the first Sunday of the early voting cycle was used as a voting day. The county-wide turnout that day (May 1) was 285, marking the lowest number of any of the 14 days of early voting.

“We’ve had Sunday voting the last two elections, but they decided not to go with Sunday voting,” Johnson said. “The only thing extra is we’re going to have all three Saturdays during the period. They struck a compromise — no Sunday and all three Saturdays.”

Early voting dates run from Oct. 20-Nov. 5. The times are 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. the first two Saturdays and then 8 a.m.-3 p.m. the final day. That’s a total of 155 hours at each location.

The sites are the Board of Elections office on North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro, Braxton Craven School in Trinity, Randleman Civic Center and Franklinville United Methodist Church.

There were 14 days of early voting for the spring’s primary, with a turnout of 10,205.

The four locations for early voting remain the same as the spring’s primary based on a unanimous vote of the Board of Elections. That involved moving an Archdale location to Braxton Craven School.

“We’re sticking with that,” Johnson said.

Braxton Craven School was the second-most visited early voting site in the county, attracting 2,108 voters for the primary.

The only municipal races in Randolph County on this year’s docket involve the City of Archdale, which holds its elections in even-numbered years. The filing period for those Archdale races has ended.

Only one contested race for Archdale positions

ARCHDALE – An at-large spot on the city council will be the only contested race in Archdale’s elections in November.

Incumbent Lorie McCroskey will have a challenge from Kelly Grooms for that position. McCroskey was appointed to the council last summer when there was reshuffling upon the retirement of long-time mayor Bert Stone.

For the other three spots on the ballot, only incumbents entered by the time filing ended Friday.

Mayor Lewis Dorsett, Ward 1 councilman Larry Warlick and Ward 4 councilman John Glass are unopposed.

Randolph County voters turn out early

ASHEBORO – Nearly 4,000 more voters in Randolph County cast early ballots for this month’s primary compared to a similar election cycle four years ago.

With four early voting sites, the total number of voters in Randolph County checked in at 10,205. Fourteen days of early voting concluded Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s number of voters was 1,055.

The primary day was set for Tuesday.

In 2018, the total number of early voters in the county was 6,376.

This spring, the final tallies for the four sites were: 5,019 at the Board of Elections office in Asheboro, 2,108 at Braxton Craven School gym in Trinity, 1,610 at the Randleman Civic Center and 1,468 at Franklinville United Methodist Church.

With the exception of May 1 (the only Sunday for early voting), each day there were more than 500 voters, topped by Friday’s 1,363.

ASHEBORO — Turnout has varied at Randolph County’s four locations for early voting during the first few days for the primary.

The busiest location has been at the Randolph County Board of Elections on North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro. That site had the largest number of votes in each of the first three days (324, 308, 130).

The next most popular early voting site has been Braxton Craven School gym in Trinity, where 142 votes were cast the first day followed by 136 and 58.

Franklinville United Methodist Church drew 73, 123 and 64 voters for 260 total.

Randleman Civic Center had the lowest total turnover for the first three days with totals of 110, 56 and 33 for 199 total.

County residents can vote at any of the early voting locations. Early voting began April 28 and it ends at 3 p.m. May 14. 

Until May 14, the only weekend date for early voting was this past Sunday.

The primary is set for May 17. On that date, voters must cast ballots at their designated precincts.

The Randolph County Board of Elections cancelled a meeting scheduled for last week. Another meeting was on this week’s calendar.
