Some county schools will see new start times this fall

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County School Board met Monday and approved a tiered bussing pilot program. The new program is intended to mitigate the current bus driver shortage and meet the State’s Department of Public Instruction efficiency ratings. County bus routes were more than two hours this school year, with pickup times starting before 5:30 am. In some cases, students were being dropped off at home after 5:30 pm.

By focusing on elementary and middle school routes, the county expects to significantly cut down route times and limit the number of necessary drivers.
This pilot system does not come without its share of challenges. Parents who drop their kids off at school will also be forced to make adjustments to their morning routines as designated school start times are expected to change. Designated middle schools are expected to begin class as early as 7:20 am. By contrast, select elementary schools won’t start class until around 8:40 am.

Uwharrie Ridge 6-12 and Southeastern Middle will see shifts from 8am and 7:40am,
respectively to 7:20 am start times. Coleridge, Franklinville, Farmer, Ramseur and Tabernacle
would see their start times shifted to 8:40am.

Schools set commencement times, activities

Commencement ceremonies for most high schools in Randolph County are scheduled for next Wednesday.

June 8 events will take place for schools in the Randolph County School System.

Asheboro High School’s commencement will be a night later, coming at 7 p.m. June 9 at Lee J. Stone Stadium on campus. If inclement weather interferes, that ceremony will be held in the South Asheboro Middle School gym.

Here are June 8 times: Eastern Randolph (6 p.m.), Trinity (6 p.m.), Randleman (7 p.m.), Southwestern Randolph (7 p.m.), Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve (7 p.m. at Journey Church in Asheboro), Providence Grove (8 p.m.) and Wheatmore (8 p.m.).

Ceremonies are generally scheduled for the stadiums on campuses. If weather conditions dictate indoor ceremonies, then tickets will be required in order for spectators to attend because of limited capacities.

Last week, Uwharrie Charter Academy held graduation Friday night in the school’s gym. Randolph Early College High School held commencement exercises May 20 at Journey Church.

For Asheboro High School’s commencement, attendees are reminded that parking is limited in many spots because of ongoing construction on campus. School officials are encouraging carpooling.

Leading up to commencement

Many schools have held graduation-related events in recent weeks, with those growing in number last week.

For instance Friday morning, Trinity held a capping and awards ceremony. 

Along with seniors collecting many recognitions was the announcement that of the 134 soon-to-be graduates, the average scholarship and grants earned per student was more than $26,000. So Trinity’s graduating class was the recipient of more than $3.5 million in financial assistance and support.

On the same day, Providence Grove seniors were slated for what’s called a graduation walk, visiting elementary schools —Liberty, Grays Chapel and Level Cross. Similar return-to-roots events were planned for seniors from other high schools, including Randleman, as well.

Many schools hold senior breakfasts on the morning of commencement. At Southwestern Randolph, organizers connected to the sponsoring Parent Teacher Student Organization have solicited community support for the breakfast “to make this a truly special event for your student since this is the last time they will be together in an informal environment before graduation.”

Classes at schools in the Randolph County School System end June 8, with a two-hour early release.

Hearing provides chance for sharing educational ideas

ASHEBORO — Developing the best ideas with students in mind and securing the support to pursue those goals is what Randolph County educators advocated for during a special public hearing Monday.

“Think about where we’re going. Being innovative,” said Aaron Woody, superintendent of Asheboro City Schools.

The House Select Committee held a public hearing on “An Education System for North Carolina’s Future” at South Asheboro Middle School. 

Renee Hayes was one of three speakers who requested to make comments following the formal presentation. The Asheboro woman said state leaders should follow the guidelines in place to make sure there’s proper funding in place.

“Support these teachers who are still in the classroom,” Hayes said. “For more than a decade (schools) have had to do more with less.”

Rhonda Dillingham, who described herself as a career educator, advocates for charter schools as the executive director of the North Carolina Association for Public Charter Schools. She said concerns about the funding structure related to all public schools must be monitored.

Dillingham said decision-makers should assess situations where school districts and charter school collaborations have been successful.

Stephen Gainey, superintendent of the Randolph County Schools System, was the first presenter on the agenda. He pointed out the growth of programs that have made a difference within county schools.

“We need people who are engaged,” Gainey said.

Gainey also emphasized the positive relationship that has been formed for high school students through a connection with Randolph Community College.

Uwharrie Charter Academy superintendent Sharon Castelli said she appreciates how her school fits within the educational structure in Randolph County.

“Not one size does fit all,” Castelli said. “We’re all unique. We all offer different opportunities for our students.”

UCA has operated for about nine years. The school has grown from 181 students to more than 1,700.

Woody said reaching proper goals within schools is an ongoing process. One of the first steps is creating the missions that should be followed.

“Pushing on each other so the very best ideas for young people can rise to the top,” Woody said. “Making sure we’re listening and we’re thinking.”

RCSS might turn to remote learning in some situations

ASHEBORO – The Randolph County School System is on the verge of implementing a new plan for days when inclement weather prevents in-school instruction.

With classes already called off numerous times this winter because of weather-related issues, RCSS Superintendent Dr. Stephen Gainey outlined a plan for future instruction, which might involve situations of remote learning.

“I just wanted everyone to know that staff members at each school are making plans to provide remote instruction should we need to employ that strategy,” Gainey said.

The initial message on the topic came in a Jan. 28 announcement. At the time, the school had two more built-in days for “snow days” or other days of canceled classes.

That stemmed, in part, because of a forecast that might have brought weather-related concerns that following weekend, but nothing materialized from that to cause school closings.

But this week was a different story.

Randolph County schools were closed Monday due to concerns about road conditions and the forecast of inclement weather throughout the morning. At first, a two-hour delay to the school day had been announced prior to the updated decision to call off classes for the entire day.

The school system’s information regarding the inclement weather policy was dubbed as “possible change to inclement weather days.”

So now the wiggle room is down to one more day available for the district to use before going to remote instruction. That would be extended for any days that in-person classes are called off because of inclement weather for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

Gainey said the use of remote instructional days in relation to missed days of school due to inclement weather hopefully would prevent using scheduled teacher workdays or spring break for make-up time.

Gainey said he wanted parents to understand that when wintry weather is anticipated, their children might come home with additional instructional resources and / or technology devices that will be needed should remote instruction be needed.

Prior to this week, schools had been closed Jan. 3, 21 and 24 in addition to multiple days of delayed openings because of inclement weather.

Randolph County School System announces STAR students

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Schools announced their “STAR 3” Students for September, 2021. STAR 3 students are recognized for being “Respectful, Responsible, and Doing the Right Thing.” The Board of Education recognizes these students and their accomplishments at a designated board meeting. A school-based committee handles the selection of each school’s awards recipient. Family members and school staff are invited to a student’s recognition at a Board of Education meeting. Three students per year, per school are recognized as STAR3 Students.

Selection criteria for the STAR 3 program include passing grades in spite of obstacles, returning to school after dropping out and is on track to graduating, having good attendance, overcoming struggles in life, earning all S’s in behavior, having academic and/or club accomplishments, receiving a nomination from faculty members.

Archdale Elementary School — Rylan Moody — 5th Grade

Rylan Moody is a role model to his peers both inside and out of the classroom! He takes pride in all of his schoolwork and seeks help when needed. Rylan wants to do well and please everyone. He does an amazing job in balancing academics and sports throughout the school year. Rylan exhibits perseverance with all tasks, even those that are challenging. Archdale Elementary School is proud and excited to have Rylan Moody as our STAR3 Student for September.

Hopewell Elementary School — Harper Cathell — 3rd Grade

Harper Cathell is a sweet, beautiful, and intelligent person. She works hard in every subject to improve academically. When in doubt, she asks questions and never gives up. In addition, Harper has had to overcome a difficult situation in her family; her grandmother passed away last school year. Her grandmother was very involved in Harper’s school life, especially since she was an employee at our school. Being back in school this year has been challenging for Harper, but she has proven that she is going to make the most of a traumatic situation. She has not allowed her grief to interfere with her academics; rather, it has strengthened her ability to persevere. We are proud to have Harper Cathell as a part of our family at Hopewell Elementary, and congratulate her on being selected our STAR3 Student for September.

John Lawrence Elementary — Kenedi Palmer — 5th Grade

Kenedi Palmer has a sweet personality and simply is a joy to teach. There are many positive ways to describe her character, but some qualities that stand out are her kindness, politeness, and friendliness to her classmates and her courteousness to her teachers and other staff. She always has a happy disposition and her gentle, quiet smile lights up a room. Kenedi works hard and puts forth her best effort when met with a challenge. She demonstrates a willingness to learn and has a growth mindset in the classroom. John Lawrence Elementary School is proud to present Kenedi Palmer as our STAR3 Student for September.

New Market Elementary School — Benjamin Wallace — 4th Grade

Benjamin Wallace is an extremely hard—working young man. He is an affable student and works well with everyone. Benjamin is persistent in meeting classroom goals, is always cheerful, and always has a smile on his face. He is a super sweet child with much personality and truly is the definition of Bobcat Pride. New Market Elementary School is honored to select Benjamin Wallace for the STAR3 Student for September.

Randolph Early College High School — Lindsay Kanipe — 11th Grade

Randolph Early College High School is thrilled to name Lindsay Kanipe as our first STAR3 Student for the 2021—2022 school year. The nominating teacher described Lindsay as “a joy to teach” and “an amazing student who consistently excels academically by always putting forth maximum effort.” Lindsay is respectful of others and exhibits a great attitude each day, both in and out of the classroom. All of these qualities make us proud to call Lindsay Kanipe a Raven and our STAR3 Student for September.

Trindale Elementary School — Christian Reyes Vicente — 4th Grade

Christian Reyes Vicente completely embodies what it means to be a STAR3 Student, by always showing responsibility, doing the right thing, and being respectful to everyone with whom he interacts. Christian comes to school each day ready to learn. He works hard, uses his time wisely, and asks questions when he needs help. Christian always has whatever he needs and can be counted upon to do the right thing and set an example for others. He always listens in class and is ready for whatever activity comes next. Christian is respectful of his classmates and all school staff, is well—mannered, and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He notices the little things that need to be done and is always willing to help out and do them. Trinity Elementary School — Kenzie Sheffield — 4th Grade

Kenzie Sheffield comes to school every morning with a positive attitude and ready to learn. She is always polite to anyone with whom she interacts and does not hesitate to help out a classmate. Kenzie is trustworthy, dependable, and reliable. Trinity Elementary School is proud to recognize Kenzie Sheffield as our STAR3 Student for the month of September.

Trinity High School — Bo Gibson — 11th Grade

Bo Gibson exemplifies what it means to be “Trinity Strong.” He is punctual, hardworking, and courteous. A leader on and off the field, Bo is a multisport athlete who excels in the classroom and lifts up his community. He has been a positive role model at both Freshmen Orientation and Open House leading up to this school year. Prior to the COVID—19 pandemic, Bo was heavily involved in the Bulldog Buddies program, in which he mentored students at Archdale Elementary School. Bo is mature beyond his years, which is why he was invited to serve as a Bulldog Buddy when he was only a ninth grader. Congratulations to Bo Gibson on being selected Trinity High School’s STAR3 Student for September.

Trinity Middle School — Mario Malaga—Pliego — 8th Grade

Trinity Middle School is a beautiful new school, but like the others in our system, it is just a building. A school is made great by the people within it. Our first—ever STAR3 Student is a great representation of the kind of student every teacher wants in class and loves to teach. Mario Malaga—Pliego is respectful and hard—working, is friendly to his peers, and offers help and assistance to others when needed. He follows directions and is an outstanding role model in the classroom. We appreciate the qualities that Mario possesses in becoming a future leader among his peers and eagerly anticipate his many future successes. Mario Malaga—Pliego is a great example of what it means to “Work Hard, Work Smart, and Work Together,” and we are thrilled to have him represent Trinity Middle School as our first—ever STAR3 Student.

Wheatmore High School — Sarah Smith — 10th Grade

Sarah Smith has an infectious personality and a spirit of kindness. As an applicant to the Student LIFT program, Sarah has organized a kindergarten book drive for the elementary schools in the Archdale—Trinity area. Her planning, organizing, and willingness to partner with our schools are traits that are needed to build strong communities. In addition to being an outstanding student, Sarah is a member of Wheatmore’s lady tennis team and the Class of 2021—2022 Student LIFT program. Wheatmore High School is proud to recognize Sarah Smith as our STAR3 Student for September.

Wheatmore Middle School — Riley Holden — 8th Grade

From day one of school, Riley Holden has shared a positive outlook and worked hard. He is always on task and strives to do his best work. Providence Grove | Cross Country | Sophomore

Auman, a sophomore, won the Millennium Charter Academy Invitational, helping the Patriots to the team title at Beeson Park in Kernersville. Auman finished the 5-kilometer race in 23 minutes, 55.61 seconds for about a 13-second victory on runner-up Annika Bell of East Wilkes. There was a field of 43 runners.

On the boys’ side, Wheatmore was the team champion among a field of 12 scoring teams. Providence Grove, led by third-place individual Robert Burton, was the team runner-up. Burton finished in 20:00.03, with Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood fourth in a personal-best 20:06.90.

Apprenticeship Randolph honors first graduates, signs 14 more

ASHEBORO — Apprenticeship Randolph, a local initiative from local businesses, Randolph Community College, Randolph County Schools and Asheboro City Schools, celebrated its inaugural class of graduates earlier this month.

Apprenticeship Randolph began in June 2016 as a collaboration among Randolph Community College, the Randolph County School System, Asheboro City Schools, the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, and local manufacturers. The goal was to bridge both the interest and skill gaps in modern manufacturing and provide a vehicle for expanding the workforce pool for advance manufacturing in the county. The program allows participants a debt-free education.

The program is for high school juniors and seniors and begins with a six-week, pre-apprenticeship summer program that consists of RCC classes and 40 hours per week of on-the-job training. Once a business selects its apprentice after this trial period, the program is spread over four years with students receiving paid, on-the-job training while earning an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Manufacturing Technology or Information Technology through RCC and a Journeyworker Certificate from the N.C. Community College System and U.S. Department of Labor.

At a celebratory dinner honoring the first eight graduates on August 10, 14 new apprentices were announced. Business and civic leaders joined the celebration.

Chris Harrington, Director of Operations at Elastic Therapy Inc., opened the dinner welcoming everyone in attendance, noting that every company represented at the event were founding partners that helped start the program. He then introduced the eight graduates, having them stand to be recognized as their name was called.

“It wasn’t too long ago when we kicked off this thing called Apprenticeship Randolph,” Harrington said. “We had some mentors that helped guide us, but we built the car as we were driving down the road. We’re very proud of this first cohort. It took a lot of flexibility and adaptability. I also want to thank everyone that helped the program and these eight gentlemen — they didn’t do it by themselves. In addition to the schools, the College, the companies, and other community organizations, we want to recognize the family members, the mentors, and the people in the support network that’s so critical to success.”

Brandon Hill, who boasted the highest GPA of the graduates, addressed the group. “I just want to say what a ride it’s been the past four years,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs. To our families and significant others, thank you. Your support throughout this whole process has gotten us to where we are today.” Hill said he glad the program was created to give students an alternative pathway to successful career beyond a four-year university. “Thanks to you, the eight of us graduating are not buried under student loans and have a college degree and great career.”

Following the dinner, a graduation and signing ceremony was held at the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center Auditorium. The 14 pre-apprentices each came onstage to sign their apprenticeship contracts with industry partner representatives.

“I knew I wanted to do something with my hands and didn’t want to go a university for another four years. This is perfect,” said new apprentice, Reece Beeson, who signed with United Brass Works Inc. “I was able to meet [United Brass Works] early on multiple times. I feel like they’re a good company, very family-oriented. I love to tinker. I love to take stuff apart and put it together and see how things work.”

Beeson said he wasn’t concerned about a four-year commitment.

“It’s just a number,” he said. “If you’re doing something you like, it won’t take long.”

The evening ended with a celebration of the eight graduates who turned their tassels ready for their careers.

 

 

Randleman High School

Randolph County Schools drops mask mandate

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County School Board adopted a resolution Monday night ending mask mandates in the county’s largest school system for the 2021-2022 school year. The resolution, adopted unanimously by the board, is effective immediately which allows teachers and students currently in summer school programs to make their own choices regarding mask usage. The new board policy cites CDC guidance and the board’s concern for individuals’ rights to make decisions regarding their own personal health in making the change. The resolution also said harassment, discrimination, bullying, or intimidation based a person’s decision to wear or not wear a mask would not be tolerated.

“It’s a big day for Randolph County Schools,” said board chairman Gary Cook following the unanimous vote. “We were one of the first school systems to step out last year and go to school when a lot of systems didn’t and we made a decision tonight that not a lot of school systems can make.”

The resolution referenced Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive orders and noted that his June 11, 2021, order rescinded the statewide mask mandate for indoor activities with only a few exceptions. The board expressed their position that promoting in-person learning, and not enforcement of mask mandates, is critical to education and health of the children of Randolph County.

The Asheboro City Board of Education will likely take up the question of mask mandates at their August 12 meeting, according to the school board’s press office.

New Trinity Middle School to open in the fall

TRINITY — The opening of the new Trinity Middle School means the end of an era for one local school and a name change for another. When Wheatmore High School opened for the 2009-10, to alleviate overcrowding at Trinity High School, Braxton Craven School and Archdale-Trinity Middle School became the middle school feeders to both high schools.

This August, Archdale-Trinity Middle School will become Wheatmore Middle School and Braxton Craven School will not reopen. The name change to Wheatmore Middle will also mean the school colors will shift to the red and white of Wheatmore.
